Description

Paul Delvaux. Autograph Letter Signed with Drawing.
"P. Delvaux." One page in French, with sketch in ink, 8.25" x 6.75", n.p.; [circa 1940s?]. In this letter to Paul Eluard (1895-1952), the French poet and one of the founders of the Surrealist movement, Delvaux writes this short note with accompanying sketch. "I think I finally have something for you. Your daughter [Cécile (1918-2016)]is here with Théo Léger [Théo Léger (1912-1982) Belgian poet and translator] at the moment and they are in agreement on this painting which I am finishing up this instant. Here is a sketch [a sketch of two people, one of which is a nude woman in the foreground] that is very [illegible]."

Paul Delvaux (1897-1994) was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination. He is often considered a surrealist, although he only briefly identified with the Surrealist movement. Delvaux was named director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1965.

Condition: Letter has usual folds; slight separations at top and bottom of center vertical fold; slight tear on bottom left hand side, under sketch; otherwise good.
