Description

Page from an Illuminated Thirteenth Century French Bible
Paris, France.
Mid-13th century.
6"x4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.
Opening page from the Book of Exodus in Latin with six-line historiated initial "H" (Hæc sunt nomina filiorum Israël) depicting Moses leading the Israelites. Moses and the two men following him are wearing the coneshaped, pointed hats worn by Jews in medieval Europe, highlighted in gold leaf. The text is in two columns with rubricated initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century, Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. Countless Bibles like this one were produced there for clerics, laity, and students. Gothic script on parchment.
