Description
Odilon Redon. Autograph Letter Signed. "Odilon Redon." Three pages (of a bifolium) in French, n.p; August 30, 1897. In this letter to Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), the French art dealer regarded as one of the most important dealers in French contemporary art at the beginning of the twentieth century, Redon writes [English translation], "I have just received your letter with the money order, thank you. I am including with this reply two drawings for the publisher. I will finish the album of the apocalypse in the coming days. As for Mallarmé's work, if you want it to be a success you should produce drawings that are as free as the text. The size of a plate is not what gives it beauty. You must admit that what with this novel pagination system, it is for the best that I have devised something which is not limited by formatting. Give me leeway, please, as Mallarmé had with the publisher. After all, this poem, which is quite abstract, does not lend itself to (visual) artistic input. I think the best is for small, intense plates that are completely free of the usual limitations placed on these things. Also keep in mind that my best lithographies are those which appeared in formats far smaller than the one you bring up. In the album du [juré?] or in the album des origines, the plates were quite small and I think, at least as far as technique goes, they were the most reliable. The same goes for several in Dans le Rêve."Odilon Redon (1840-1916) was a French symbolist, painter, printmaker, draughtsman, and pastellist.
Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds.
