Description

A complete Hawthorne manuscript story, "The Lily's Quest," included in Twice Told Tales

Nathaniel Hawthorne. Autograph manuscript signed of the story "The Lily's Quest. An Apologue." Signed at head ("Nathaniel Hawthorne"). [1839].

6 ½ pages, 4to (248 x 194 mm). With an integral address leaf (portion). Bound in 19th-century red straight-grained morocco, gilt-lettered on upper cover and spine, by Stikeman & Co.

The story, "Lily's Quest" first appeared in print in the weekly paper The Southern Rose published in Charleston, South Carolina on 19 January 1839 and was collected in Twice Told Tales. The manuscript was given by the publisher to her cousin Miss Dickeson who gave it to her cousin L. R. Ward from whom William Loring Andrews bought it. The manuscript is bound with correspondence concerning the manuscript and engraved portraits of Hawthorne.

Hawthorne manuscripts are of great rarity. The last leaf has the address on the verso and 18 lines of manuscript on the recto. Half the leaf is absent affecting most of the address but the manuscript is complete and unaffected. The missing piece is a letter from Hawthorne, sending the manuscript. The letter is now in the Berg collection at the NYPL. According to online auction records, this was the last manuscript of a story by Hawthorne to appear at auction when it was offered in the Stockhausen sale in 1974.

Condition: Stained; the last leaf defective and mended. Binding with a little wear to spine ends and joints; corners slightly worn; some darkening to leather at margins; front free endpaper detached.

Provenance: William Loring Andrews (bookplate, and related correspondence); David Gage Joyce; William E. Stockhausen (his sale, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 19 November 1974, lot 238; purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, Inc., New York, 1975. From the William A. Strutz Library.
