Georges Rouault. Autograph Letter Signed."Georges Rouault." Four page bifolium in French, 7.75" x 12.25", n.p.; n.d. In this letter to the French painter Georges Desvallières (1861-1950), Rouault begins in a playful and intimate mood, with much of the letter written in jest and irony, indicating that he and Desvallières were close friends. Rouault writes, "you are all reason, but reason is not always right". He mentions that some aspects of his nature escape him while others he knows well, and that he wishes he could transfuse that which he has in excess. He says solitude makes him maniacal and sensitive and has "opened his eyes" more than any book and more than spending time with people has. Rouault continues that while his Desvallières is complaining of aging and wishes to go study the techniques of the Venetians before it is too late, he has a "pearl" [as Rouault refers to himself in this portion of the letter] with a remarkable technique that surpasses the Venetians' in vigor and expressiveness. He writes that is Desvallières a man of good faith and of faith, who understands Christianity and though he may not have the technique of the Venetians or the Ancients, he is special in his own way. He asks that his friend lean on him and use him and that he stops "going into himself" so much.
Georges Henri Rouault (1871-1958) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printer, whose work is often associated with Fauvism and Expressionism.
Condition: Letter has several folds; otherwise good.
