Description

Gabriel García Márquez. Later draft of El general en su laberinto. No place, no date [but circa 1989].

298 pages, 4to. Typescript printout, with each of the eight chapters paginated separately (39 pp., 35 pp., 36 pp., 37 pp., 38 pp., 36 pp., 37 pp., 40 pp.). Housed in a black cloth spring binder.

An intriguing later draft of this 1989 novel, in which García Márquez narrates the final days of the Great Liberator, Simon Bolívar. This text contains over 150 variations from the published version, with the altered words and passages indicated in bold typeface. Most of the changes are of single words but there are a few extended phrases as well. There are no holograph emendations. In chapter one, the passage that reads, "Sólo Manuela sabía que su desinterés no era inconciencia ni fatalismo, sino la certidumbre malancólica de que habia de morir en su cama, pobre y desnudo, y sin el consuelo del heroismo," changes in the printed version so that "heroismo" becomes "de la gratitud pública." In chapter three of this manuscript, Miranda Lyndsay is described thus, "La voz grave y calida, como de violonchelo, perturbado apenas por un leve rastro de su inglés materno, debió avivar en él los rescoldos de la nostalgia." The final five words are replaced with, "en él recuerdos irrepetibles." Many of the changes seem to follow these examples, opting for less poetic or romantic formulations in favor of a more down-to-earth style ("unrepeatable memories" in place of "the embers of nostalgia").

The García Márquez papers at the Harry Ransom Center contains four typescript drafts of this novel corrected by the
author, plus a set of corrected galleys. Given the absence of a date or any notations as to the priority of this present
manuscript, it is hard to fix it precisely in the sequence of drafts, but it is clearly one of the later drafts.

Condition: Minor wear; else, fine.

Provenance: Originally in the collection of the family of the dedicatees of Cien años de soledad.
