Description
G. K. Chesterton. Autograph letter signed. Two pages, 6 7/8 x 9 inches, Beaconsfield, England; no date. A letter to Lord Nelson, in which Chesterton thanks his friend for sending him "the text of Nelson portraits," and apologizes for not writing sooner. In part:"I had a silly confused feeling: that I had rather you thought I had been killed in a car on the way home, than write a merely curt or conventional note, on receiving such an honour [...] Ever since I found the Faith, I have felt that there remained to me out of an older England one thing worthy of the Christendom from which it was sundered: the one name of a new chivalry: the most human of the heroes: that great artist in arms... As Belloc wrote of the inn to which Nelson and Keats had come-'those two great poets.' You will see at least that my gratitude is sincere except to be incoherent. Please forgive me for the delay & the delirium." Signed, "G. K. Chesterton."
Condition: Smoothed folds. A touch of soiling at the top margin of both pages.
