Description

Charles Perrault. Autograph note signed "Perrault" and dated "7 Juillet 1672," sending payment instructions for work completed to a chateau. Twelvemo (6.5 x 4.5 inches; 165 x 114 mm). [1] page, [blank, conjugate]. Paper slightly browned with a few minor spots, wrinkles, and old folds. Signature dark and strong. Near fine.

Charles Perrault (1628-1703) came from a distinguished Parisian family and held a number of fairly important government positions under Louis XIV, becoming secretary to the finance minister Colbert in 1663 and being placed in charge of Royal buildings in 1671. He was also a prolific author, active in the literary quarrel between the "Ancients" and the "Moderns" (taking the side of the latter, against Boileau and Racine), and was elected to the Académie Française in 1671. Perrault would be little remembered today, however, had there not appeared in 1697 his (anonymously published) collection of eight fairy tales, Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé. In our note the spelling is old-fashioned and a number of words are hard to read.

Added note: Perrault served as administrative aide under Jean Baptiste Colbert, finance minister to King Louis XIV. Using his influence, he was able to have his brother Claude Perrault employed as designer of a section of the Louvre and was himself involved in business activities such as the one referred to in this document.
