Description

Book of Hours Manuscript Leaf
France.
1520s.
4-1/2"x 2-1/2" leaf, 11" x 16" frame.
Single illuminated verso page of a single vellum folio from a French Book of Hours, in Latin, ca. 1520-1530, with the opening for the Hours of the Cross: "Ad matutinas de sancta cruce." This exquisite page was removed from a small prayer book known as a Book of Hours. It was painted in France in a Parisian atelier known as the "1520s Workshop." The page has a border decoration with poppies and white butterflies, painted as if they were lying on the surface of the page and casting actual shadows onto the painted parchment. This type of illusionistic border was very popular in French Books of Hours, starting in the 15th century. There is a three-line initial "D" in blue with a ladybug in the center, on a gold ground. The rubrics are in black and gold, humanist script, dark brown ink, white parchment. A lovely page in superb condition; matted and framed.
