Beatrix Potter. Original Holograph Manuscript draft for The Solitary Mouse herein containing a version of Wag-by-Wall. With Archive Relating to the Evolution of Wag-by-Wall. Circa 1940s. Including an original holograph manuscript featuring The Solitary Mouse, a first American edition, and the first appearance in print of Wag-by-Wall in The Horn Book Magazine. Beatrix Potter. Original Holograph Manuscript draft for The Solitary Mouse herein containing a version of Wag-by-Wall. [Sawrey, England: circa 1940]. Twenty-three pages on twelve lined sheets numbered in her own hand. (7 x 9.125 inches; 177 x 231 mm). Flattened folds on some leaves, four pages have a small numbered sticker in top right corner, slight staining in corners and occasional ink smudging, neither of which affect text. Several pages have cross outs and corrections in Beatrix's hand. Clean and bright, ink generally strong and dark, in a few places a bit lightened. Housed in orange paper folder with hand-written title. Very good.

[Together with:] Beatrix Potter. Wag-by-Wall. Boston: The Horn Book, Inc, 1944. First American edition. Twelvemo. (4.75 x 6.25 inches; 121 x 159 mm). [1, blank], half title, frontispiece, title page, copyright page, [4, introduction by "Bertha E. Mahony"], [2], [19], [1, type] pages. Printed vignette headpieces throughout; mounted frontispiece portrait of Potter. Grey linen covered boards stamped in red, J.J. Lankes woodcut inlaid to front board, small stain on front board. Red floral printed endpapers. Internally clean; top edge trimmed and stained red, other edges untrimmed. Dust jacket unclipped ($1.50); spine panel with some loss at head and foot, author's name and title are partially affected, heavy chipping with some loss on front panel, rear panel has 2.5-inch closed tear, front flap detached, rear flap partially detached, text on flaps not affected. Consecutively numbered from previous issues, 130-248 pages. Illustrated paper wrappers. Slight wear to spine, ¾ inch open tear to top corner of front wrapper, library stamp to front wrapper, some light rubbing on back wrapper; interior very clean. Very good.
