Description

[Samuel Clemens] Mark Twain: Autograph Manuscript Page (Unsigned) from The Gilded Age. One page (paginated 15), 5" x 8"; no place, no date [circa 1873]. Written entirely in Twain's hand of page 23 in Chapter 1 (Squire Hawkins and His Tennessee Land-He Decides to Remove to Missouri), in part: "Do you see these papers? Well, they are evidence that I have taken up Seventy-five Thousand Acres of Land in this county - think what an enormous fortune it will be some day! Why, Nancy, enormous don't express it - the word's too tame!" Complete with a few added corrections.

Condition: Minor toning with flattened folds. Creasing and minor stains at top margin. Previously tipped in with mounting remnant at left center of recto, and mounting strip along right margin of verso.
