to the true originall copies. The second impression. London:
Printed by Tho. Cotes, for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the
signe of the Blacke Beare in Pauls Church-yard, 1632]. The Second
Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays. Lacking the first four
leaves, including the title-page and Droeshout's engraved portrait
of Shakespeare (text here begins with Milton's "Upon the Effigies"
and "An Epitaph" on recto and with verso blank). Also lacks leaves
e3 (page 55/56 in "The First Part of King Henry the Fourth," with a
later blank leaf inserted in its place) and ddd4 (page 419,
containing the last part of "Cymbeline). Woodcut initials and head-
and tail-pieces. Text printed within rules. Bound to style in
modern full brown levant morocco, covers double-ruled in blind,
spine lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, modern
marbled endleaves and blanks. "Effigies" leaf is mounted, e4 (leaf
331) repaired with outer margin strengthened, and leaves d3, y1 and
final eighteen leaves with lower corners renewed with some loss of
text. Approximately fifteen leaves with other repairs or minor
restoration, approximately two leaves with marginal tears (one with
an inner marginal tear, one with an outer marginal tear),
approximately four leaves with small holes, with minor text loss.
Browned and stained throughout, with some occasional ink or pencil
notations and markings. Upper margins a bit close, with some
occasional minor loss of text. Overall, a good working copy.The Second Folio contains the first appearance in print of John Milton. His anonymous work, "An Epitaph on the admirable Dramatike Poet, W. Shakespeare," composed about two years before the publication of the Second Folio, while Milton was still a student at Cambridge, appears on the "Effigies" leaf.
