Description
The Fourth Folio Edition of Shakespeare's Plays
William Shakespeare. Mr. William Shakespear's
Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. London: Printed for H.
Herringman, E. Brewster, and R. Bentley, 1685. The Fourth Folio
edition of Shakespeare's Plays. Folio. Approximately 13.25 x
8.75 inches. 272, [2], 328, 192 [sic] pages. Lacks first six leaves
(begins with The Tempest) and lacks the seven additional
plays not present in the first two folio editions (it ends with
Cymbeline and lacks Pericles and the six plays now
known not to be written by Shakespeare). Contemporary full brown
calf, five raised bands. Binding worn, joints and corners well
worn, front board detached. Pages have occasional mild stains,
foxing, short tears, signed a number of times by a Joseph Bell (one
dated 1791), ink notations (mainly of a dramatic nature) and
markings throughout, possibly by Bell. With slight loss to lower
corner of page 63 of Measure of Measure with no loss to
text, same with page 65. Similar loss to page 67/68 with loss of
perhaps ten words, some marginal loss to bottom corner of 69/70.
Two-inch tears to pages 92-95 of The Second Part of King Henry
the Fifth, and one-inch loss to bottom corner of pages 173-176
(with minor loss to text), long tear to last page of Macbeth
has been repaired with old paper and the glue has browned, and the
final page of Cymbeline (page 191/192) has a large chip
missing to upper corner, with some loss of text. Even though this
is a poor copy, it is still one of the most important editions of
Shakespeare's plays. Wing S2915. Jaggard, p. 497. Pforzheimer 910.
