Description

First Edition of Thomas Hardy's Extremely Rare First Book, Inscribed by Him

Thomas Hardy. Desperate Remedies. A Novel. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1871. First edition of Hardy's scarce first book, one of only about 500 copies printed. Inscribed by Hardy on a slip of paper mounted on the recto of the front free endpaper of Volume I: "Autographed as requested- / Thomas Hardy." Three octavo volumes. vi, 304; vi, 291, [1, blank]; vi, 274 pages. Complete with half-titles. Volumes trimmed to different sizes: Volume I is 6.75 x 4.25 inches, Volume II is 7.25 x 4.75 inches, and Volume II is 7 x 4.5 inches. Boards are same size, however. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked in later red cloth, spines ruled and lettered in gilt. Some wear to bindings, some soiling in text, overopened in a few places; in Volume II pages 37 and 227 have ink blots on them, obscuring small portions of text, and page 95 has a short tear at the margin. Still, a very good set of this very rare item. Purdy, pp. 2-5. Not in Sadleir (number two on his List of Comparative Scarcities).
