Scottish Dialect. Kilmarnock: Printed by John Wilson, 1786.8vo in 4s (185 x 115 mm). Title within typographical border, typographical head- and tail-pieces. Early 20th-century full red morocco gilt, by Riviere & Son, top edges gilt; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION OF THE RARE KILMARNOCK EDITION OF BURNS' FIRST BOOK, one of 612 copies printed. The 44 poems in this volume represent virtually all forms of verse that Burns had attempted, and show a gift for comedy, a power of pathos, and an affection for humble things that are Burns' strongest characteristics. In the preface, the poet presents himself as one who is "unacquainted with the necessary requisites for commencing Poet by rule," and instead "sings the sentiments and manners, he felt and saw in himself and his rustic compeers around him, in his and their native language." Published in late July 1786, all but thirteen copies were sold within a month, winning him sincere local admiration before the second edition (Edinburgh, 1787) of 3000 copies won him wider recognition.
Condition: Title-page with inner margin renewed; some tears occasionally touching or crossing text discreetly repaired on some lower margins (M3, M4, N3, N4, Z2, Dd4, Ee2, Ee3); some other marginal flaw and small repairs; some soiling throughout.
