8vo. Half-title. Contemporary Spanish style marbled sheep gilt, gilt-lettered morocco lettering-pieces on spine, top edge gilt, by Riviere; quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY BROWNING TO LORD COLERIDGE, on the half-title; "Lord Coleridge / with Robert Browning's / true respect & regard. / May 19. '78." John Duke Coleridge, 1st Baron Coleridge (1820-1894), was an English lawyer, judge and Liberal politician. Over the course of his career he held the posts of Solicitor-General for England, Attorney-General for England, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and Lord Chief Justice of England. He was the great-nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and a correspondent of Browning's.

Condition: A little wear to spine ends and corners; joints rubbed; front free endpaper detached but present. Lightly toned throughout.
