FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, INSCRIBED BY BLACKMORE on the front flyleaf: "Alfredo Pinto Leite / with the kind regards / of the writer / R.D.B. / 1869."
Blackmore's classic historical novel is based on a group of historical characters and set in the late 17th century in Devon and Somerset, particularly around the East Lyn Valley area of Exmoor. Blackmore originally had trouble finding a publisher for Lorna Doone, and the first edition was published in a run of only 500 copies. However, it was both a critical and a commercial success and has never been out of print since.
Sadleir records three copies, all of which had been in the possession of Blackmore's niece, Eva Pinto Leite. Alfredo Pinto Leite, was a Portuguese wine merchant, who was married to Agnes Maguire, the sister of Blackmore's wife Lucy. They had four children before Agnes died leaving Blackmore and Lucy (who were childless) to adopt the Pinto Leite children as a surrogate family.
Condition: Minor wear to corners and spine extremities; a few small scuffs to covers; lower board edges rubbed. Lacking final blank in Vol III; bound without the advertisements at the end of Vol. III.
References: Sadleir 227; Wolff 536.
Provenance: Alfredo Pinto Leite (presentation inscription, and his morocco bookplates); E. H. Mills (monogram bookplate in Vol. I); Doris L. Benz (bookplate in Vol. I, her sale, Christie's New York, 16 November 1984, lot 35). From the William A. Strutz Library.
