Description

An uncommon variant of Twain's first book, with "the celebrated jumping frog" stamped in gilt in the center of the front board

Mark Twain. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Other Sketches. Edited by John Paul [Charles Henry Webb]. New York: C.H. Webb, 1867.

12mo. Publisher's green cloth, spine and front board decorated and lettered in gilt, gilt-stamped frog in the center of front board, rear board with a frog stamped in blind. Quarter green morocco slipcase lettered in gilt, cloth chemise.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. First issue with inserted leaf of advertisements and unbroken type on pp. 21, 66, and 198. A desirable and uncommon binding variant of green cloth and the gilt-stamped frog in the center of the front board.

UNCOMMON CLOTH VARIANT. BAL notes: "On the front is a goldstamped frog. This is usually placed at the lower left corner in a diagonal position with the head pointing to the upper right corner. In some copies (as on the present copy) the frog is stamped in the center of the cover in a vertical position with the head pointing up."

"The first important foreshadowing of crime-in-the-ascendancy in the short story... this acknowledged classic of legend and folklore is an early example of the confidence game in fiction..." (Queen's Quorum).

Condition: Cloth scuffed and a bit worn, corners rubbed, spine ends pushed and beginning to fray. Spine slightly leaned, hinges cracked but holding, a few tears to endpapers, front free endpaper effaced, early (contemporary?) ownership signature to fly leaf. Scattered spotting and pencil annotations throughout.
