Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Hartford, Conn: The American Publishing Company, 1876. First American edition, second printing, BAL issue A, printed on laid paper and with front matter mispaginated. Octavo. 274, [2] pages with 4-page publisher's catalogue dated "December 1st, 1876." With woodblock frontispiece and numerous in-text illustrations. Publisher's original blue cloth, decorated and stamped in black and gilt. Peach endpapers, all edges trimmed. Housed in a custom clamshell of dark blue polished calf, boards elaborately blindstamped and with a single gilt rule, spine panel decoratively blindstamped, ruled and lettered in gilt, and with gilt decorations.

Condition: Cloth scuffed, worn, and stained, repairs to corners, rebacked with original spine laid-down. Both hinges reinforced. Textblock toned with scattered foxing and intermittent thumbsoiling throughout. Good.
