Description

The Extremely Scarce Complete First Edition of Stendhal's Racine et Shakspeare

M. de Stendhal [Marie-Henri Beyle]. Racine et Shakspeare. Paris: Chez Bossange, Delaunay, Mongie [and:] Chez les Marchands des Nouveautes, 1823, 1825. First editions of parts I and II of this scarce early work by Stendhal. Two octavo volumes bound in one. 55, [1, blank]; vii, [1, blank], 103, [1, Errata] pages. Complete with both half-titles. Both volumes finely bound in twentieth-century half brown levant morocco over marbled boards, covers ruled in gilt, spine tooled and lettered in gilt, marbled endleaves. Some foxing in text, a few pages neatly trimmed at fore-edge (without loss of text). A fine copy. Stendhal's rare defense of the Romantic aesthetic, rejecting Racine's rigid, classically-based rules for writing and specifically supports Shakespeare's far less rigid style and the writing of plays in prose. No copy of this book, complete or otherwise, has been at auction in over forty-five years. Carteret II, 357.
