16 pages, 4to (183 x 133 mm). 19th-century dark blue morocco, gilt-panelled on sides, spine gilt, edges gilt, by F. Bedford; quarter morocco slipcase.

FIRST EDITION of Milton's an attack on Catholicism written in response to Charles II's 1672 Declaration of Indulgence granting religious freedom to Protestant nonconformists and Catholics. This was Milton's last tract, published the year before his death.

VERY RARE: According to Milton scholar William Riley Parker: "there are fewer surviving copies of Of True Religion than of Milton's earliest pamphlets (except Of Education)" (p. 1145).

Condition: A little wear to joints and spine ends, with tiny chip at head of spine. Last leaf (C4) with two tiny repairs and tiny split on fore-margin; same leaf with small paper flaw/thinning at center of text (slightly affecting a few letters, one possibly retouched).
