Description

Herman Melville. White-Jacket: or, the World in a Man-of-War. London: Richard Bentley, 1853. First English edition, second issue, with cancel title pages. Two volumes. Octavo. Later half dark blue calf over marbled boards, spine elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, red and green morocco lettering pieces titled in gilt, all edges trimmed, top edge stained red.

A fine copy of Melville's fifth novel, prefiguring some elements which later found their way into Moby Dick and Billy Bud. The incredibly scarce remainder issue, comprised of unsold first edition sheets, reissued with cancel title page. Auction records show only 6 copies offered in the last 40 years.

Condition: Minimal edgewear, corners a touch bumped, spines slightly sunned. Pages lightly toned, some offsetting from turn-ins through first few leaves, a few scattered stains to text block edges, some scattered thumbing, a few corners creased, a few tears to fore-edges. Overall, a near-fine copy.
