Brothers, 1890.8vo. Original grey and white cloth, decorated in gilt and silver, top edge gilt, with original white silk ribbon marker; housed in its original white cardboard two-part box as issued; modern white cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITON OF THE POET'S FIRST BOOK, a landmark of American literature. Dickinson's Poems was published posthumously in a small edition of 500 copies on 12 November 1890, edited by Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mabel Loomis Todd. A recluse throughout most of her life, Dickinson did not circulate her poetry in her lifetime beyond a small circle of family and close friends. This publication gave Dickinson's work its first public exposure, and the book proved to be so popular it required two more printings before the end of the same year. Myerson's Binding B, with wavy line stamped in gilt along the meeting of the two cloths on covers.
A REMARKABLE COPY, EXCEEDINGLY BRIGHT AND FRESH, WITH THE RARE SURVIVAL OF ITS ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S BOX.
Condition: Tiny spot on the white cloth on upper cover; slightest blistering to grey cloth in a few places. The original white card box with splits at some corner and edge seams; tiny rust stains from original corner fasteners; a few small chips.
