Description
Edgar Allan Poe. Tales. New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845.8vo. With 4 pp. publisher's advertisements at end. Modern polished deep red stained calf, corners tipped in morocco, spine decorated in gilt and black.
FIRST EDITION, third printing, with copyright notice in three lines and no imprints on copyright page. "Here... begins the detective story, with 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue,' 'Mystery of Marie Roget,' and primus inter pares, the character of the amateur detective who triumphs over the blundering police, in 'The Purloined Letter.' The earlier Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque... contains a larger number of the Poe tales of horror, which are still the artistic standard for that school, but this volume adds 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Descent into the Maelstrom,' and 'The Gold Bug'" (Grolier).
Poe's Tales is considered "the first important book of detective stories, the first and the greatest, the cornerstone of cornerstones... the highest of all highspots" (Queen's Quorum).
Condition: Joints rubbed; front flyeaf with ink scrawl, rear flyleaf torn; closed marginal tear on one leaf crossing text (pp. 141/142); upper corner of pp. 95/96 torn away with loss of pagination; lower blank margins chipped on two leaves (pp. 157-160); occasional spotting or browning; a few stains; some marginal toning and soiling.
