Description

Presentation copy in a rare presentation binding: one of only two copies known

Charles Reade. The Cloister and the Hearth. A Tale of the Middle Ages. London: Trübner & Co., 1861.

4 volumes, 8vo. Original lavender cloth, edges gilt; half morocco slipcase. With an autograph letter laid in Vol. I (see below).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the error in line 11 on p. 372 of Vol. II. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, on the pastedown of Vol. I: "Revd. John Gibson / from his sincere / friend / Charles Reade."

Apparently one of only two recorded copies in lavender cloth with all edges gilt, the other being a presentation copy to John Forster. According to John Carter: "I think the fact that the only two examples of this elegant variation so far recorded are both presentations makes it tolerably certain that this is an author's, not a mere presentation or gift style" (More Binding Variants, p. 34). This copy with title variants as follows: without the periods after "Etc" on title of Vol I, after "Volumes" in Vol. II, and after "Hearth" in Vol. III. Also, without the periods after "Hearth" on titles of Vols. III and IV, as in the Sadleir copy.

Laid in is an interesting letter from Reade to a Mr. Cornwallis, 12 September [1861], 2 pages, 8vo, which reads: "I send you herewith the first instalment of early sheets of my new novel. The title is 'The Cloister on the Hearth.' I am ashamed to say the work will contain 1.500 of these pages. If you are out of it I will take 15 per cent. If you are in it, 12. But I look to you to secure a genuine return, for that is the difficulty with these pubs. There is considerable competition am[ong] publishers here to have the book..."

Condition: Some wear to spine ends, with a few short splits; cloth along lower joint of Vol. I starting to split; joints and extremities rubbed; corners a little bumped and worn; a few hinges cracked or starting. Lacking rear endpaper in Vol. IV. Slipcase chemises defective.
