Description

Charles Dickens. Serialization of Oliver Twist in Bentley's Miscellany. London: Richard Bentley, 1837-1839. First appearance in print of Oliver Twist. Five octavo volumes containing the first five volumes of Bentley's Miscellany. Profusely illustrated with text illustrations and most called-for engraved plates by Cruikshank, Phiz, Buss and others. Publisher's green blind-tooled cloth with gilt titles on black leather spine labels. Moderate overall wear, light staining and soiling to boards. Some puckering to cloth, and creasing to the leather title labels on a few volumes. Corners bumped and exposed. Front hinges to first volume and fifth volume a bit tender at the spine foot. Hinges starting in volume two. Previous ownership signature to title page of volume one, partially erased (same signature appears on the title page of volumes two and three, untouched). A mostly clean text, with some scattered foxing, heaviest to the plates. A few unobtrusive tears to page corners. Altogether, a very good copy. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
