One of 100 Proof Copies, Signed by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Poems. Illustrated by Edward Lear. London: Boussod, Valadon & Co., 1889. First edition, one of 100 copies signed by Tennyson, this being number 58. Printed on Japan Paper. Large quarto. Approximately 12.5 x 9.25 inches. [8], [vi], 51, [1, blank], [1, colophon], [1, blank] pages. With portrait frontispiece of Tennyson after Watts and sixteen full-page plates after Lear inserted. Six head- and tail-pieces after Lear and one head-piece portrait of Lear. All illustrations with printed tissue guards. Publisher's half brown levant morocco over brown cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt, with gilt central lettering ("To E. L.") on the front board. Joints lightly worn (yet still solid), some wear to edges. Overall, a near fine copy of this rare item. From the collection of prominent Bay area book collectors Babette and Herbert Clayburgh with their bookplate. Tennyson and Lear greatly admired each other's work, and this mutual respect eventually grew into friendship. Lear died in 1888, and this work was published as a memorial by Tennyson for his friend.Auction Info
