One of 500 First Editions of Hardy's Second Book

[Thomas Hardy]. Under the Greenwood Tree. A Rural Painting of the Dutch School. By the Author of 'Desperate Remedies.' In Two Volumes. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872. First edition, one of 500 printed. Two octavo volumes. [vi], 215; [vi], 216 pages. Publisher's green, beveled, sand-grain cloth with gilt spine titles, rules in gilt and black on the spine, and black Oxford frame stamping on the covers. Moderate wear to the cloth, with noticeable rubbing to the spine gilt, especially to volume two. Spines cocked. Corners rubbed and some exposed. Bindings shaken, and cracked in several places in volume one and after page 64 of volume two. Some gatherings standing proud, with one or two almost loose in volume two. Hinges tender and starting. Ownership signatures to the front pastedowns. A complete copy of Hardy's rare second book, published anonymously, in very good condition. Purdy, pp. 6-8. Sadleir 1117. Webb, pp. 5-6.
