2 volumes, Vols. I and III only (of 6), 8vo (210 x 128; 213 x 131mm). Engraved throughout, with vignettes on title-pages. Contemporary calf; cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY ROBERT BURNS on the title-page of Vol. I: "To Mr. Whyter from / Robt. Burns," and on the verso of the title of Vol. III (in pencil): "Remember me! Ro. B."

Burns contributed some 200 songs, new or adapted to the successive volumes of The Scots Musical Museum. The only other record of the recipient of these volumes is in a letter from Burns (November 1788?), address to "Mr. Whyter at Paterson's inn, Foot of the Pleasance," concerning a book and scroll. See Ferguson, Letters, vol. I, p. 381.

Condition: Bindings very worn; covers and front flyleaf detached on Vol. I; spine of Vol. II broken, with upper cover becoming loose. Vol. I lacks 5 leaves: pages 23-24, 49-52, 93-96; fore-margin of final leaf in Vol. I trimmed by binder into plate mark; occasional browning and spotting throughout.
