Description
[Jane Austen]. Pride and Prejudice. London: T. Egerton, 1813. First edition. Three volumes. 12mo. [iv], 307, [1, blank]; [iv], 239; [iv], 323, [1, blank]; watermarked 1808 and 1812. Volume I title page supplied in facsimile and pages [1]-4 re-inserted and tipped-in to stubs. Late nineteenth-century binding by Zaehnsdorf; mottled calf decoratively ruled in gilt, brown leather spine labels lettered in gilt, spine elaborately decorated in gilt with five raised bands. Minor edgewear, a touch of wear to head and foot of spines, boards a touch scratched. Inner dentelles gilt, brown endpapers; minor offsetting to margins, binder's ink stamp and bookseller's ink stamp to the front free endpaper versos. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed and gilt, brown ribbon markers; minor offsetting from ribbon markers, minor thumbsoiling, moderate foxing, text blocks unevenly toned, minor wear to gilt on edges, professional repairs to the title page of Volume III (margin and 27 mm closed tear just touching imprint, only just starting to separate again) and to some text block margins in all three volumes. Housed together in custom brown cloth slipcase. Very good.A beautiful set of Austen's most recognizable story, the foundation of a variety of adaptations (and daydreams) the world over. Pride and Prejudice was first adapted to film in 1940 (starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier), again in 2005 (starring Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfayden), and countless times in various remakes and spin-offs since, both domestic and international. The 2005 adaptation featured particularly memorable musical scoring, costuming, and on-site filming and cinematography, including the use of Chatsworth House (home to the Duke and Duchess of Yorkshire) as Darcy's stately Pemberley home.
