FIRST EDITION. Three volumes. 12mo. Nineteenth-century half brown calf over marbled boards, spines lettered and ruled in gilt. With half-titles present in each volume. Paper watermarked "BUDGEN 1815" or "1815." Housed in a brick-red cloth slipcase, gilt stamped leather labels to spine, cloth chemise.

Copies with the half-titles present are uncommon.

"Emma had been read for Murray by William Gifford, editor of the Quarterly Review, who had 'nothing but good to say' of the book" (Keynes).

Condition: Wear to boards and joints, leather cracked and chipping, corners rubbed, front joint of volume II split but holding. Small bookseller's description pasted to volume I front pastedown. Ink ownership washed from title page of each volume. Internally clean, mild foxing. Very good.
