Description

[James Hogg]. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner: Written by Himself. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1824.

8vo (184 x 115 mm ). Modern half-calf gilt to style, preserving earlier marbled boards and original spine label.

FIRST EDITION of Hogg's Gothic horror masterpiece. Though it received a mixed critical response and poor sales when it was first published in 1824, the novel is now considered Hogg's masterpiece, praised by literary critics for its "terrifying picture of the devil's subtle conquest of a self-righteous man" and frequently cited as an inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) which, similarly, examines the duality of good and evil.

Condition: Some rubbing and toning to boards. Lacking initial and terminal blank leaves; a little spotting to frontispiece and title; occasional light spotting or foxmarks; leaf 2C1 trimmed a little short (3 mm).
