First Edition of Pope's Homer, With a Subscription Slip Signed by Pope
[Alexander Pope, translator]. Homer. The Iliad of Homer, Translated by Mr. Pope. London: Printed by W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintott, 1715-1720. [Together With:] [Alexander Pope, translator]. Homer. The Odyssey of Homer. London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1725-1726. Each volume a first edition, subscriber's issue (presumably issued before other issues of the first edition). Approximately 11 x 8 inches. Complete in eleven quarto volumes. Iliad with half-title, portrait of Homer, folding map of Greece in Volume I, folding plate of the Siege of Troy in Volume II, and the Shield of Achilles plate in Volume V; Odyssey with portrait of Homer, engraved title page. Each volume has privilege leaf, as issued. This edition is embellished with ornamental initials and devices not used in the trade editions. Laid-in is the original subscription slip of "Colonel Hara" (he is named on the List of Subscribers), and signed "A Pope". All volumes uniformly bound in contemporary full mottled calf, covers ruled in gilt, spines ruled and tooled in gilt, with brown morocco lettering labels. Minor wear to bindings, a few joints starting, previous owner's royal (with crown) and noble (with arms) bookplates. A near fine set. Lintott gave approximately 750 specially-bound copies of this work to Pope to sell directly to subscribers. Samuel Johnson referred to Pope's translation of the The Iliad as the greatest ever produced in English or any other language.Auction Info
