Description

One of a Few Specially-Bound Copies for Zane Grey's Personal Use, Inscribed to His Brother

Zane Grey. Tales of Fishes. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1919]. First edition (code "F-T" on copyright page). Inscribed by Grey in green ink to his brother, "Hollywood, Calif - / Nov 18, 1919 / To R. C. Grey / Who is the Reddy and the R. C. / of the following pages / from his brother / Zane Grey" on a front blank. Octavo. Illustrated with photographs by the author. Publisher's three-quarter dark green morocco (now largely faded to brown) over marbled boards with gilt spine titles. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Other edges uncut. Only a few copies were issued by Harper's as such, for Grey's personal use. Housed in a custom green morocco clamshell case. Minor edge wear to boards, with some bumping. Overall, a very good copy of a very rare Grey association copy. Interestingly, there is the beginning of an inscription, upside-down on the rear blank, where Grey started to inscribe the book for his brother before he realized he was holding it the wrong way. From a private collection in North Carolina.
