First Edition, in the First Issue Dust Jacket, Inscribed and Signed by Thomas Pynchon
Thomas Pynchon. The Crying of Lot 49. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1965. First edition. Inscribed and signed by Pynchon on the half-title page, "10/86 / To Michael Urban / With All Best Wishes / Thomas Pynchon." Octavo. 183 pages. Publisher's yellow cloth over gray boards with black spine titles. Brown paper endpapers stamped "w.a.s.t.e." Top edge stained blue. Original first issue dust jacket priced $3.95 and with the number "366" on the front flap. Very minor wear and rubbing to the book and jacket. Previous owner's ink signature at the base of the front free endpaper. A near fine copy. Accompanied by a photocopy of a letter sent from Pynchon to Carla Urban, the inscribee's mother, in which Pynchon agrees to sign some books for her son, Michael, a lymphoma sufferer whose birthday was coming soon. Four books signed from Pynchon to Michael Urban, including this one, appear in this auction.Auction Info
