FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS LOVER GERTRUDE BUCKMAN on the front free endpaper: "For Gertrude / with love / from Cal / 'If I ever from this great rule do err...'." "Cal" was a nickname bestowed on Lowell in boarding school.
Gertrude Buckman was an American author and book reviewer for The Parisian Review. She was the first wife of poet Delmore Schwartz, a contemporary and close friend of Robert Lowell. After Buckman and Schwartz divorced, Lowell and Buckman had a short-lived affair, which led to the dissolution of Lowell's marriage to the author Jean Stafford, to whom the present title is dedicated.
Condition: Mild staining to cloth; some edgewear. Dust jacket decoratively clipped, price retained (priced "$2.50"); jacket scuffed and somewhat worn; small yellow sticker to lower spine panel; vertical tear (c. 29 mm) at head of spine panel (c. 29mm); some edgewear with a few chips and short tears; some soiling to verso.
