Description

Robert Frost. North of Boston. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1914.

8vo. Publisher's brown cloth-backed drab gray-brown boards, printed paper labels on front cover and spine.

FIRST EDITION, second issue (for American publication). PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR WITH AN 8-LINE POEM on the front free endpaper: "A Winter Evening Walk. / I had for my winter evening walk -- / No one at all with whom to talk, / But I had the cottages in a row / Up to my shining eyes in snow. / And I thought I had the folk within / I had the sound of a violin; / I had a glimpse through curtain laces, / Of youthful forms and youthful faces. / Robert Frost / For Ethel Lang."

One of only 150 copies of this issue with the Holt cancellans title-leaf, made up of sheets from the first edition, first issue (printed in London by David Nutt in 1914). The 150 Holt copies sold rapidly; with a clear demand for more copies and, fearing a pirated edition rumored to be shortly published, Holt set up and published their own edition in April of 1915 (Crane A3.2).

The eight-line inscription is comprised of the first two stanzas of Frost's poem "Good Hours" which appears as the final poem in the present title, though not listed in the Contents. Crane does not identify this poem as appearing in the present edition, but includes this poem as an addition "not included in the contents" in his A3.2, the first American edition (the first edition printed in America), appearing on p. 137. See the next lot for the second issue of Crane's A3.2, with "Good Hours" appearing on p. 137.

Condition: Some wear and staining to boards, some edgewear, printed paper spine label chipped and worn, spine ends pushed and a bit worn. Some minor staining to textblock, confined to the margins.

References: Crane A3.1.

Provenance: Ethel Lang (presentation inscription); The Old Corner Book Store, Inc., Boston, Mass. (bookseller's ticket to front pastedown). From the William A. Strutz Library.
