Robert Frost. A Boy's Will. London: David Nutt,
1913.8vo. Publisher's cream linen-paper wrappers, stamped in black, with two four-petaled flower devices, rubber stamped on p. iv: "Printed in Great Britain." Quarter morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, BINDING D. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FROST WITH HIS POEM "STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING." Additionally, inscribed on the half-title by the author: "First edition. - RF." Inscribed with the complete text of the poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" on a blank page opposite the first page of text, signed "Robert Frost / For Rita [sic] Dicksteen."
The printer reports one thousand sheets were originally produced of the first edition of A Boy's Will, though no more than 350 copies were initially bound for distribution (binding A). Around 1917, David Nutt bound and sold an unknown number of copies bound in vellum-paper boards (binding B). Following the publisher's bankruptcy after WWI, the remaining unbound sheets were acquired by Simpkin Marshall & Co. of London, who bound 100 copies in cream wrappers (binding C). Dunster House of Cambridge, Massachusetts, purchased the remaining sheets and had these sheets bound in the present cream linen-paper wrappers. The copies to be sent to America in 1923, as the present copy, were then rubber-stamped "Printed in Great Britain" on p. iv.
Condition: Minor soiling to wrappers. The text is a bit toned.
References: Crane A2.
Provenance: Rita [sic] Dicksteen (presentation inscription). From the William A. Strutz Library.
