Description

Pablo Neruda's Epic Poem, Canto General, One of 500 Copies Signed by Neruda and Artists Diego Rivera and David A. Siqueiros

Pablo Neruda. Canto General. Mexico: [Talleres Graficos de la Nacion], 1950. First edition, one of 500 numbered copies (this being number 342) printed on "Malinche" paper, and signed by Neruda and contributing artists Diego Rivera (whose double-page painting is printed on the front endleaves) and David A. Siqueiros (whose double-page painting is printed on the rear endleaves). Folio. Approximately 13.75 x 9.25 inches. [568], [8, Lista de Suscritores a Esta Edicion], [1, colophon], [5, blank] pages. Publisher's full turquoise cloth, with Neruda's fish emblem stamped in gilt on front cover, spine lettered in gilt. Spine a bit toned, some bumping to spine and corners, hinges just a bit tired but not cracked (not surprising, due to the weight of the text block), some intermittent light foxing in text, a few tiny ink spots on signed limitation page and facing half-title, some occasional over-opening in text, ink markings to a few names in the Guatemala section of subscribers (page [7] of the Lista de Suscritores) as well as an ink notation at the bottom of that page: "-All these individuals/are either Communists or/fellow travelers/H. Fila [?]". Overall, a near fine copy.

More Information:

This massive book is central to Neruda's overall philosophy. In it, he praises the achievements of Macchu Picchu, as well as condemning the slavery that built it. It has been hailed as one of the finest political poems of the twentieth century.
