Description

Perhaps the Most Scarce McMurtry Item Imaginable: The Advance Long Galley Proofs of "In a Narrow Grave," with All of the Typographical Errors - Including "skycrapers"

Larry McMurtry. In a Narrow Grave: Essays on Texas. Austin: Encino Press, 1968.

Advance Long Galley Proofs. Initialed by publisher William Wittliff on the first page proof: "1st page proof / July 22/68 / W.D.W." Sixty-one sheets of long galley paper, printed on rectos only. Approximately 25 x 7.5 inch sheets.

Some mild thumbsoiling and rubbing, else fine. Now housed in cloth clamshell case with clear Lucite display panel.

When this book was published the typographical errors were so blatant, that McMurtry insisted that the entire edition be scrapped (it is estimated that no more than fifteen copies of the original edition survived) and re-published with corrections. The most famous error was "skycrapers" for "skyscrapers" on line twelve on page 105. These proofs are a unique and interesting McMurtry item.
