Description
John Steinbeck. Cannery Row. New York: The Viking Press, 1945.8vo. Publisher's buff cloth, spine and front board stamped in blue; original illustrated dust jacket.
FIRST EDITION, cloth issue. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO A RELATIVE WITH A SMALL DRAWING OF A BIRD on the front free endpaper: "For Lee Rodgers / good luck / John Steinbeck." Lee Rodgers was a young relative of Steinbeck's sister Ester's husband, Carroll Rodgers.
The cloth issue occurs in two variants: light buff cloth and canary-yellow cloth. "According to Frederick B. Adams, Jr., who secured his information from Glick and Colman of the Viking Press, 'There was not enough light buff cloth available, so the yellow was selected to finish the run'" (Goldstone & Payne).
Condition: Some light discoloration to cloth; minor wear to spine ends, with a few tiny splits at foot; corners just bumped; some other very minor edgewear. Dust jacket price clipped, with spine panel lightly and flap folds lightly toned; minor wear and toning along top edge.
