James Joyce. Ulysses. New York: Random House, 1934. First edition, fourth printing. Octavo. 768 pages. Publisher's cream cloth binding with black and red titles. No dust jacket. Over-opened at the half-title. Some soiling to cloth. All in all, a very good copy of James Joyce's enduring masterpiece.Originally published in Paris in 1922, Ulysses was banned in the United States until 1933. This is the first "legal" edition of the novel to be published in America after Judge John M. Woolsey's landmark decision (in United States vs. One Book Called Ulysses) that Ulysses was not, in fact, pornographic, and therefore could not be obscene. Woolsey's verdict concerning Ulysses has been ranked "among the most civilized ever handed down by an American Court" and allowed millions of American readers to experience the novel that the Modern Library ranked Number 1 on their list of "100 Best Novels" in 1999.
