James Agee. Autograph manuscript, containing partial drafts and background information for A Death in the Family. No place, no date [but circa 1948-1955].11 pages (10 7/8 x 8 1/2 inches; 275 x 215 mm), written in pencil on rectos only, comprising two full pages of manuscript, the remainder partial pages and various notes. With corrections and additions in Agee's hand. With an additional typed page on carbon paper with a few corrections in an unknown hand.
AUTOGRAPH DRAFT AND NOTES FOR AGEE'S POSTHUMOUSLY PUBLISHED AND PULITZER PRIZE WINNING NOVEL A DEATH IN THE FAMILY. The manuscript begins with a few small lines of notes: "Your burial urn / O my ancestral dead / My ancestors." The manuscript draft then continues in earnest: "My ancestors, my fathers and my mothers whom I have never known; who lived, as hungrily as I live now, who were such a universe, and whom Darkness took; for whom this world is the burial urn: How little quiet there is, in so much darkness..." The remaining pages constitute various notes and outlines, some pages with headlines identifying the contents as: "Notes," "Exact Order," "Quasi-Scenario," and "A Secular Requiem."
A Death in the Family was published in 1957, two years after Agee's untimely death at age 45. He was posthumously awarded the 1958 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for the novel.
Condition: Sheets lightly toned; some minor soiling and scattered spotting; one sheet with a triangle shaped portion cut out, not affecting text; typed page with some soiling and creased along old folds.
