J. D. Salinger. The Catcher in the Rye. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. First edition stated. Octavo. 277 pages. Publisher's black cloth binding with gilt titles. Original first state dust jacket designed by Michael Mitchell, with Lotte Jacobi photo credit on rear panel and with Salinger's head just barely cropped at the top edge. Jacket price of $3.00 present. Jacket spine sunned, some light chipping to spine and corners, one short creased tear at lower corner of front flap, very light creasing to jacket spine. Jacket toned, although red color on front panel still vibrant. Some rubbing to edge of jacket, small ink notation on jacket verso of rear flap, very minor rubbing to binding, ink ownership stamp on front free endpaper. Still, a near fine copy of Salinger's masterpiece.
