FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY SALINGER TO S. J. PERELMAN AND HIS WIFE, on front free endpaper: "To Sid and Laura, / with much affection, / Jerry / Cornish, N.H. / 7/29/61."
Franny and Zooey contains two novellas about the two youngest members of his celebrated Glass family. Both stories first appeared in The New Yorker ("Zooey" was the longest piece ever to run in one issue of the magazine at the time), in 1955 and 1957, respectively.
Salinger had met S. J. Perelman while both frequented the New York literary circles in the 1950s, and while both were contributing to The New Yorker magazine. Perelman published nearly 300 pieces in The New Yorker over the course of his career. Salinger would become Perelman's closest literary friend, and they would refer to each other as "Sid" and "Jerry." In 1928 Perelman married Laura West, whom he met through her brother, the novelist Nathaniel West. The couple collaborated on numerous plays and screenplays, becoming one of Hollywood's most successful screenwriting husband-and-wife teams.
EXTREMELY RARE PRESENTATION COPY: According to online auction databases only one other presentation copy of Franny and Zooey has appeared at auction. A very fine association copy.
Condition: Some very slight fading to cloth along upper edges of boards. Dust jacket with some minor nicks and creasing at ends of spine panel; tiny scrape to green on spine panel; some minor creasing; a little soiling.
