Inscribed Frieda Lawrence Book, Issue of The Laughing Horse, and the Red Baron's Horn Snuff Container.

First edition limited to 1,000 hand-numbered copies of which this is copy number 106. Inscribed by the author in red ink, and with an undated Christmas card laid in which is also inscribed by her. Octavo. 311 pages. Illustrated. Grey cloth boards with natural cloth backstrip, printed paper label on spine, original dust jacket. Minor rubbing and wear, else fine. [and:] Willard Johnson, editor. The Laughing Horse, May - 1924. Santa Fe: James T. Van Rensselaer, et. al. Octavo. Unpaginated. Red wrappers printed in black, housed in a half-morocco folded box with titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Includes a letter from D. H. Lawrence titled "Dear Old Horse" on pages three through six. The issue also includes a poem by Mabel Dodge Luhan titled "The Ballad of a Bad Girl" with an illustration by D. H. Lawrence captioned "The Bad Girl in the Pansy Bed." [and:] Horn Snuff Container Given to Willard Johnson by Frieda Lawrence. Willard Johnson was the editor of The Laughing Horse, a literary magazine published in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was a close friend of the Lawrences and helped Frieda, in particular with many of her publishing projects after her husband's death. This horn snuff box measures about 3" in length and is pictured on an included photograph. The horn snuff container has a fancy script "R" carved below a crown. It is said that it had been given to Frieda by her distant cousin, Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the famous "Red Baron." Fine condition.Auction Info
