Description

Publication containing two early Fitzgerald stories, inscribed to his childhood friend and Princeton classmate, Norris Dean Jackson

F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nassau Literary Magazine. Volume LXXIII, Number 4, October 1917. [Princeton, NJ: Princeton University], 1917. Containing "The Cameo Frame" and "The Pierian Springs and the Last Straw."

8vo. Publisher's printed wrappers. Buckram folding case.

FIRST APPEARANCE OF TWO FITZGERALD STORIES. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO HIS LONG-TIME FRIEND, NORRIS DEAN JACKSON, on the front wrapper: "Do read this story Norrie - / Scott F. -" With manuscript corrections in ink in both stories, possibly in Fitzgerald's hand.

Norris Dean Jackson (1895-1990), like Fitzgerald, was a native of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The two men were lifelong friends, having met as children, and both attended Princeton University as members of the Class of 1917 (though Fitzgerald did not graduate). In an affidavit signed by Jackson in 1920, confirming Fitzgerald's residence so the author could receive military service bonus payments for Minnesota veterans of WWI, Jackson wrote: "This is to certify that I have known Mr. Francis Scott Fitzgerald for ten years..." After graduating from Princeton, Jackson married another childhood friend of Fitzgerald and fellow Princeton grad, Elizabeth "Betty" Ames, also of Saint Paul. The Ames home was featured in a short story by Fitzgerald, "The Scandal Detectives." Jackson, it has been reported, had a reputation as Fitzgerald's "straight man," taking care of the author when he was out drinking.

Condition: Minor edgewear. A fine copy.

References: Bruccoli C64 and C65.

Provenance: Norris Dean Jackson (presentation inscription); acquired directly from the estate; acquired from James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers, Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1991. From the William A. Strutz Library.
