Ernest Hemmingway. For Whom the Bell Tolls. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. First edition, later printing lacking the Scribner's "A" on the copyright page. Inscribed by Hemmingway on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs John J. Brennan / with sincere good wishes / Always / Ernest Hemmingway." Octavo. [i]-[x], 471 pages. Publisher's beige cloth with the author's signature stamped in black on the front cover and titles in black against red backgrounds on the spine. Externally about very good with slightly bumped corners and a small stain at the lower back corner. Front hinge broken; small newspaper announcement of the film premier mounted to front pastedown with the usual offsetting on the recto of the front free endpaper; another larger newspaper clipping mounted to the flyleaf with the expected offsetting to the verso of the front free endpaper; toning to the rear pastedown and end paper. The dust jacket is present but ragged. Housed in a custom box with marbled boards and leather spine titled in gilt.Auction Info
