Poems. Paris: Contact Publishing Co., 1923.8vo. Original printed grayish-blue wrappers, uncut; cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of Hemingway's first book, one of 300 copies printed. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY HEMINGWAY on the front free endpaper: "To Ernest Walsh / and Miss Moorhead / with love from Ernest Hemingway / Paris 1924."
Hemingway's first book, Three Stories & Ten Poems, contains the stories "Up in Michigan," "Out of Season," and "My Old Man," plus the ten poems. Six of the poems had been published in Poetry in January 1923; the remaining four and all three stories appear here for the first time. It was published by Robert McAlmon at his Contact Publishing Co. The book was printed in Dijon by Maurice Darantiere, the same printer Sylvia Beach used for Ulysses the previous year.
A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY. Born in Detroit, the American poet, Ernest Walsh joined the American Air Service at the outbreak of World War I, but was seriously injured when his plane crashed while in training. In 1922, after four years in a military hospital, Walsh moved to Paris, hoping to join the literary scene. His funds soon ran out, leaving him penniless, sick, and exhausted in one of the city's finest hotels. He was rescued by Ezra Pound, who paid his debt. Pound introduced Walsh to Scottish poet and artist Ethel Moorhead, who became his benefactor. Walsh and Moorhead co-founded and edited This Quarter, a literary magazine based in Paris, which published Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Kay Boyle, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and himself, among others. He died prematurely in 1926, never having regained good health since his crash.
Condition: Wrappers with some very slight toning to spine and edges; a few tiny splits or nicks near spine ends; minor soiling. Very slight marginal toning to text pages
