Description

First Edition, First Printing in the Scarce First Issue Dust Jacket

Ernest Hemingway. Men Without Women. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First edition, first printing, with a perfect "3" on page 3. Octavo. 232 pages. Publisher's black cloth with gold paper labels on front board and spine, stamped in black. Top edge red. In the first issue dust jacket, with no reviews. Light rubbing to the extremities, with mildly worn corners. Minor soiling to cloth. Light spotting to the first few leaves and text edges. Creasing to a few terminal leaves. Very minor chipping at the fold ends of the jacket, with light bumping to the top edge. Noticeable dust-soiling to the jacket panels and spine. Pencil notation of the number "70" and four small-to-tiny dark ink stains on the jacket spine. Overall, a tight, square copy in very good condition, in a great, unrestored example of the rare first issue jacket.

"There were fine and important stories among the fourteen collected in the volume [Men Without Women], some of them certified masterpieces: 'The Undefeated,' 'Hills Like White Elephants' and 'In Another Country'" (James R. Mellow: Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences, p. 353). Hanneman 7A.
